Occupational disability insurance
What if your income suddenly stops

Frequently asked questions about BU
Answers to the most important questions
What is occupational disability?
Occupational disability (Berufsunfähigkeit) exists if, for health reasons, you are likely to be permanently unable to practise your most recently practised profession, or only to a limited extent. How exactly this is defined is set out in the terms of the respective tariff.
How high should the monthly occupational disability benefit be?
That depends on your income, your running costs and your life situation. In a conversation we work out together which benefit amount suits you, instead of stating a flat figure.
Until what age should the BU run?
As a rule, the term is matched to the planned end of your working life. Which term makes sense for you is something we discuss based on your personal planning.
What does a BU cost?
The contribution depends, among other things, on age, profession, state of health, benefit amount and term. A flat statement would not be reputable – in the initial consultation you will receive an individual assessment.
What is the difference from insurance against incapacity for gainful employment (Erwerbsunfähigkeit)?
Insurance against incapacity for gainful employment (Erwerbsunfähigkeitsversicherung) generally only pays out if you can no longer pursue any gainful employment, or only to a very limited extent. BU, by contrast, is tied to your specific profession. The details differ depending on the tariff.
Can I adjust my BU later?
Depending on the tariff, there are options to adjust the cover later, for example on certain life events. Whether this is possible and under what conditions is something we check when choosing the tariff.
What happens to my contribution in old age?
How the contribution develops depends on the tariff. The terms set out whether the contribution stays the same or can change. We pay particular attention to this when comparing.
How does an anonymous preliminary risk assessment work?
Your health information is submitted to several insurers without your name – before an application is made. This way you can see in advance how your chances of cover are likely to look.
